Bill named after late civil rights leader John Lewis
Members of the majority in the House of Representatives introduced new legislation this week to advance their initiative of securing voter rights before the upcoming 2022 midterm election. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, named after the late Georgia lawmaker and civil rights leader, seeks to reinstate the oversight powers of the 1965 Voting Rights Act which would require states to gain approval from the Department of Justice before changing their voting laws.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi outlined her plan for the legislation saying, “With the attack on the franchise escalating and states beginning the process of redistricting, we must act. When the House returns on August 23rd, Democrats plan to pass H.R. 4 – and we hope it can secure the bipartisan support this vital legislation deserves.”
